Day 1: Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Cave Camp

Begin your adventure at Umbwe Gate, immediately tackling the steep, winding path through dense rainforest. Follow the Umbwe River upward, with the sounds of the forest surrounding you. Reach Umbwe Cave Camp nestled in the mist, your first taste of the mountain’s raw wilderness.

Ascend above the tree line into the heather zone, where the landscape opens dramatically. Watch as the Western Breach reveals itself through swirling mists. Arrive at Barranco Camp beneath the imposing Barranco Wall, with Kibo Peak dominating the horizon.

Conquer the Iconic Barranco Wall! Start with an exhilarating scramble up the famous wall, then traverse scree slopes beneath the gleaming icefalls of Heim, Kersten and Decken Glaciers. Descend slightly to Karanga Camp, an oasis in the alpine desert.
